Alcohol Units Calculator

Calculate the number of alcohol units (grams of pure alcohol) in a drink based on its volume and alcohol strength, for one or more servings. A useful benchmark for monitoring your consumption—calculation is entirely local, and no data is sent.

How it works

In France, one “alcohol unit” (or standard drink) conventionally corresponds to about 10 grams of pure alcohol—this is the amount in a glass of beer, wine, or spirits served at a bar, whatever the drink type, because serving sizes are adjusted to strength. This tool calculates the mass of pure alcohol from the volume and strength you enter, using the density of ethanol (0.8 g/mL).

Why do a glass of wine and a beer contain the same amount of alcohol?

Because standard serving sizes are set to do exactly that: a glass of beer (25 cL at 5%) and a glass of wine (12 cL at 12%) both contain about 10 g of pure alcohol, despite very different volumes and strengths. That’s precisely the point of the unit: it lets you compare different drinks on a common basis.

What are the low-risk drinking guidelines?

Santé publique France recommends, to limit risks, not exceeding 10 alcohol units per week, no more than 2 units per day, and having days without alcohol. These guidelines apply to an adult in generally good health and do not apply during pregnancy, where total abstinence is recommended.
