Alternative Text (Alt) Generator

Enter an image file name to get a suggested alternative text (alt attribute) that is readable and accessible.

Example:
The extension and hyphens/underscores will be cleaned automatically.

How it works

Many image files have names like IMG_2024_final-v2.jpg, which are useless for accessibility and SEO. This tool cleans up the file name (removes the extension, replaces hyphens and underscores with spaces) to offer a readable starting point that you can then refine based on the image’s actual content.

Why is the alt attribute important for SEO and accessibility?

The alt attribute lets screen readers describe the image to visually impaired users, and helps search engines understand the visual content of a page (images are not indexed like text). An image without a relevant alt is a missed SEO and accessibility opportunity.

Is the generated text enough as-is?

It’s a good starting point, but the file name doesn’t always faithfully describe the actual visual content. It’s recommended to review and adjust the generated text so it accurately describes what the image shows, in its context on the page.

100% local processing: generation runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly—the file name never leaves your device.
