Remove Internal Silences from an Audio File
Automatically shorten long silences in the middle of a WAV recording (pauses in a podcast, gaps between takes) by keeping only a short transition silence. Works only with 16-bit PCM WAV files.
How It Works
A podcast or interview recording often has long gaps between sentences. This tool detects passages whose amplitude stays below the specified threshold for at least the chosen minimum duration, and shortens them to a brief 50-millisecond silence, while leaving the rest of the recording untouched.
How do I choose the right amplitude threshold?
A low threshold (close to 0) only detects near-total silence, while a higher threshold (a few hundred) also treats slight background noise as silence. If spoken passages are removed by mistake, lower the threshold.
Why aren't the silences completely removed?
A very short residual silence (50 ms) is kept at each cut to avoid a jarring edit effect or an audible “click” between two passages, which makes the result sound more natural.
