How It Works
Birthstones are precious or semi-precious stones associated with each month of the year, following a tradition that goes back several centuries in the West. They are often offered as jewelry for a birthday. Select your birth month to see the corresponding stone or stones, based on both the traditional and modern lists (which sometimes differ for the same month).
Why do some months have two different lists?
The "traditional" list goes back to older customs, while the "modern" list was made official in 1912 by the American association of jewelers (National Association of Jewelers), partly to suggest stones that were more available or affordable. As a result, months like June or December have a different stone depending on which list is used.
Does a birthstone have any special symbolic meaning?
In popular tradition, each birthstone is sometimes associated with certain virtues or symbolism (protection, luck, energy), but these aren't scientifically validated beliefs. They remain especially appreciated as an aesthetic and symbolic choice for personalized jewelry or a gift.
