How it works

BMI is a simple indicator used by healthcare professionals to place a weight relative to a height, by dividing the weight (in kg) by the square of the height (in meters). It's a quick screening tool, not an individual medical diagnosis.

What are the BMI categories used?

According to the standard thresholds of the World Health Organization: below 18.5 is considered underweight, between 18.5 and 25 is normal weight, between 25 and 30 is overweight, and above 30 is obesity.

Is BMI reliable for everyone?

No, it doesn't distinguish muscle mass from fat mass and can be misleading for highly muscular athletes, older adults, or people still growing. It's a general indicator, to be interpreted with the advice of a healthcare professional if needed.
