How it works

This tool projects your revenue over 3 years from an annual growth rate, applies a variable cost rate (proportional to revenue) and then your annual fixed costs, producing a net profit for each year and cumulative cash flow that includes the initial investment. It also calculates the break-even point — the annual revenue at which the business becomes profitable.

How is the break-even point calculated?

The break-even point is the revenue at which the contribution margin on variable costs exactly covers fixed costs: it's calculated by dividing annual fixed costs by the contribution margin ratio (1 minus the variable cost rate). Below this threshold, the business makes a loss for the year; above it, it generates a positive profit.

How is the payback period estimated?

The tool tracks cumulative cash flow year after year, starting from the initial investment (negative) and adding the net profit of each period. The indicated payback period is when cumulative cash flow returns to zero or above, using a linear interpolation for the year the crossover occurs. If this threshold isn't reached within the 3 projected years, the tool clearly states so.

This summary relies on simplified assumptions (linear growth, variable costs strictly proportional to revenue) and is an estimate meant to structure your thinking or a first set of figures: it is no substitute for the advice of an accountant or financial advisor for a business plan intended for investors or a bank.

The calculation happens entirely in your browser: no entered data is sent to a server.
