How it works
A chemical element is randomly drawn from about thirty common elements in the periodic table, and four possible answers are offered, only one of which is correct. Click your answer for instant feedback, then move on to the next question.
Why don't some symbols correspond to the first letter of the English name?
Many chemical symbols come from the element's Latin or Greek name: iron (Fe) comes from Latin “ferrum,” gold (Au) from “aurum,” and sodium (Na) from “natrium.” These symbols were established historically and are used worldwide, regardless of language.
How can I memorize chemical symbols effectively?
Repeatedly reviewing a small group of elements at a time, relying on associations (like the Latin origin of a symbol), is more effective than trying to learn everything at once. This quiz lets you practice in short, repeated sessions.
