Child adult height predictor

Estimate a child's probable adult height from the heights of both parents, using the "mid-parental height" formula used in pediatrics as a first approximation. Purely indicative result, calculated in your browser.

Example:

How it works

The mid-parental height formula adds together the heights of both parents, applies an adjustment of +13 cm for a boy or -13 cm for a girl (to account for the average height gap between adult men and women), then divides the result by two. It's a statistical estimate based on heredity, not a guaranteed individual prediction.

What is the margin of error for this estimate?

The range shown corresponds to an interval of about ±8.5 cm around the central value, which statistically covers the vast majority of cases. A child's final height also depends on non-genetic factors (nutrition during childhood, general health, living conditions), which explains this relatively wide margin.

Is this estimate reliable from birth?

The mid-parental height formula remains a valid approximation at any age, but growth monitoring by a pediatrician using growth charts (measurements repeated over time) gives a much more precise estimate, especially after age 2-3 when the growth trajectory becomes more stable.
