Coffee to Water Ratio Calculator

Calculate the ideal amount of ground coffee and water according to your brew method (V60, drip coffee maker, French press, cold brew, espresso), for a balanced cup every time. Instant, fully local calculation.

How it works

A coffee's taste depends heavily on the ratio between ground coffee and water: too much water gives a weak, bland cup; too little gives a bitter, overly strong one. Each brew method has its reference ratio, recognized by baristas: enter the method and one of the two amounts (water or coffee), and the tool automatically calculates the other.

Why does the ratio vary so much by method?

The contact time between water and coffee varies greatly from one method to another: an espresso extracted in 25-30 seconds under pressure needs a much more concentrated coffee ratio (1:2) than a cold brew steeped cold for several hours (1:8), which is then diluted before drinking. A V60 filter (1:16) sits in between, with a gentle extraction over a few minutes.

Can I adjust the ratio to my personal taste?

Yes, the "custom ratio" option lets you set your own proportion if you prefer a stronger or milder cup than the classic reference. Once you find your preferred ratio, you can reuse it systematically to reproduce the same result every brew.
