Crossword helper (letter pattern)
Know some letters of a crossword answer but not all? Enter a pattern like _A_S_ (the _ character stands for an unknown letter) and its length: the tool searches a built-in list of French words for exact matches.
How it works
The pattern you enter (for example _A_S_) is compared letter by letter against each word in a built-in list of common French words embedded directly in the page: the _ character accepts any letter at that position, while other characters must match exactly (ignoring accents and case). Only words with the same length as the pattern are kept. The length can be inferred automatically from the pattern or specified separately if you already know it.
Is the word list complete, like a real dictionary?
No, it's a list of several hundred common French words embedded locally, designed as a quick helper rather than an exhaustive Scrabble- or Larousse-style dictionary. Some rare, conjugated, or highly specialized words may therefore not be found even if they are valid.
Do accents count in the pattern?
No: the search ignores accents both in the pattern and in the compared words (“é” and “e” are treated as equivalent), which makes entry easier when you're unsure of the exact accentuation of a crossword word.
The search runs entirely in your browser against an embedded list: no data is sent to a server.
