Daily Step Goal Calculator
Set a realistic daily step goal based on your current step count and your objective (maintenance, fitness, weight loss), with a weekly progression plan plus an estimate of distance walked and calories burned.
How it works
This tool starts from your current daily step count and chosen goal to determine a realistic step target, then calculates a progression plan in increments of 500 steps per week, a commonly recommended method for increasing activity without risking injury. It also estimates distance walked and calories burned at your goal, based on an average stride length (0.762 m) and your weight.
Why increase steps gradually instead of all at once?
Jumping from 3,000 to 10,000 steps a day overnight increases the risk of joint pain or excessive fatigue, especially after a long period of inactivity. Increasing by about 500 steps per week gives your body time to adapt while you progress steadily toward your goal.
Where do the 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 step thresholds come from?
These are general benchmarks: 8,000 steps a day is often cited as a threshold associated with good cardiovascular health for activity maintenance, 10,000 steps is the popular goal for improving fitness, and 12,000 steps or more is sometimes recommended alongside weight loss. These figures are indicative only: they do not replace personalized recommendations from a healthcare professional, especially if you have a particular medical condition.
