How it works

Before creating a character for Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any other role-playing game based on the six classic ability scores, you need to determine their starting values. Choose a method and click the button: all six ability scores are generated at once, together with their associated modifier.

Why drop the lowest die in 4d6?

The "4d6, drop the lowest" method is the most widely used official method since the 3rd edition of D&D: it rolls four six-sided dice, ignores the lowest result and adds up the other three. This produces scores between 3 and 18, with a more generous average than a plain 3d6, resulting in overall more capable characters.

What does the displayed modifier mean?

The modifier is the value actually used in in-game dice rolls: it equals (score − 10) divided by 2, rounded down. A score of 14 therefore gives a modifier of +2, while a score of 8 gives −1. This is the number added to (or subtracted from) a d20 roll during a skill check or an attack.

Is the standard array equivalent to dice rolls?

The standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) offers a guaranteed, balanced total with no variance: handy for preventing a player from having a character noticeably weaker than another at the table. Dice-rolling methods are less predictable but can sometimes produce exceptional scores (even an 18 to start with).

All rolls are generated locally by your browser: no character data is sent to or stored on a server.
