Dog Age Calculator in Human Years
Convert your dog's age into human years based on adult size, using a more realistic formula than the popular “1 dog year = 7 human years” rule — the early years count for more, and the pace then varies depending on the breed's size.
How it works
Contrary to popular belief, a dog does not age linearly at a rate of “7 human years per year”. The first year of life already corresponds to roughly 15 human years (sexual maturity is reached very early), the second year adds another 9 years or so, and then the pace stabilizes according to the dog's adult size: smaller breeds age more slowly afterward than very large breeds.
Why does a dog's size affect its aging?
Large breeds grow faster but have a shorter life expectancy and age more quickly once they reach adulthood, while small breeds take longer to reach their final size but generally live longer. That's why this calculator applies a different aging pace after the first two years, depending on the size you select.
Does this conversion have any practical use?
Yes, it helps you better understand your dog's health needs: an 8-year-old large-breed dog, equivalent to a human senior, needs extra attention (adapted diet, more frequent vet visits) compared with a small-breed dog of the same age, which is still relatively young from a physiological standpoint.
