How it works

An emergency fund is used to absorb the unexpected—job loss, costly repairs, a health problem—without going into debt. The usual rule in personal finance is to set aside the equivalent of 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. This tool multiplies your monthly expenses by the number of months of coverage you want, and estimates the time needed to reach it based on your savings capacity.

Should I aim for 3 months or 6 months of expenses?

It depends on your professional and family stability. A salaried employee on an open-ended contract with a stable income and no dependents can make do with 3 months, while a freelancer, a family with a single income, or an uncertain professional situation justifies aiming for 6 months or more.

Should the emergency fund include all my expenses, including leisure?

No, the idea is to cover only essential and non-negotiable expenses (housing, food, energy, insurance, transportation) that would continue even if you lost your income. Leisure spending or long-term savings are generally not part of this calculation, as they could be temporarily cut back during a financial crunch.
