Essay length planner
Enter your target word count (or page count) and the number of body parts desired: the tool automatically distributes the word volume between introduction, body parts and conclusion to help you structure your writing.
| Section | Words |
|---|---|
| Introduction | 150 words |
| Part 1 | 400 words |
| Part 2 | 400 words |
| Part 3 | 400 words |
| Conclusion | 150 words |
| Total | 1500 words |
How it works
Based on your overall word-count target, the tool reserves a percentage for the introduction and conclusion (10% each by default, adjustable), then evenly distributes the rest among the number of body parts you specify. This gives you a concrete target per section even before you start writing.
Why adjust the introduction and conclusion percentage?
Depending on the type of assignment (essay, thesis, article), the introduction and conclusion may represent a larger or smaller share of the total text. Reducing this percentage leaves more words for the body; increasing it is useful for a heavily framed introduction or a conclusion opening onto a new question.
How is the page count estimated?
The estimate divides the total word count by the number of words per page you specify (300 words per page by default, a common average for single or 1.5 line-spaced text). Adjust this value according to the formatting required by your instructor.
The calculation is done entirely in your browser: no data about your topic or your text is sent to a server.
