How it works
The emoji you enter is drawn in large format on a square background (colored or transparent), then this source image is used to generate all the usual favicon variations (16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 180x180 for iOS) as well as a multi-resolution .ico file that can be used directly at the root of your website.
Why doesn't the emoji display as expected?
An emoji's rendering depends on the system font used by your browser: most emojis display identically everywhere, but some very recent ones may look different (or in black and white) depending on the operating system used to generate the favicon.
Can I use multiple emojis at once?
Technically yes, the field accepts multiple characters, but a favicon remains very small when displayed: a single well-centered emoji is far more readable than a combination of several symbols once reduced to 16x16 pixels.
