Flooring quantity calculator

Calculate the number of planks, tiles, or slabs needed to cover a room, with a built-in waste allowance, based on the room dimensions and the chosen flooring. Fully local calculation, in your browser.

Example:

How it works

The calculation starts with the floor area of the room, to which a waste allowance is added (cuts at the edges of the room, around corners or pipes, always generate unusable offcuts). This increased area is then divided by the area of one plank or tile to get the number of units to buy, and then, if you provide the coverage per box, by that value to find the number of boxes.

What waste allowance should I plan for?

A 5–10% allowance is usually enough for a simple rectangular room laid in a straight line. For diagonal installation, a room with many angles, pillars, or for a pattern that needs matching (like herringbone flooring), it's safer to plan for 15% or even 20% extra.

Why always round up to the next whole number?

You can't buy a fraction of a plank or box: the calculated number is therefore always rounded up to the next whole number, to make sure you have enough material to finish the installation without interruptions or a second trip to the store.

The entered dimensions are used only in your browser, for this one-off calculation.
