How it works

Setting a freelance project price using only "hours × hourly rate" often forgets unexpected events (client back-and-forth, bugs, delays) and the profit margin needed to grow your business. This tool successively adds incidental expenses, a percentage-based safety margin, then a profit margin, to get a realistic final price to put in a quote.

Why add a safety margin on top of the profit margin?

The safety margin (or "buffer") covers the unexpected issues that almost always extend a project beyond its initial estimate: validation back-and-forth, scope changes, technical blockers. The profit margin, meanwhile, is the real profit you're targeting once all costs are covered: the two have different roles and add up.

What does the "effective hourly rate" shown at the bottom of the result mean?

It's the final price divided by the originally estimated number of hours: it lets you check that the price you get really corresponds, once all margins are added, to an hourly rate consistent with your positioning — not just your base hourly rate shown at the start of the calculation.

Your rates and estimates are neither saved nor transmitted to a server: everything stays in your browser.
