L/100km ↔ mpg converter

Convert your vehicle's fuel consumption between liters per 100 km, kilometers per liter, and miles per gallon (US or UK) — handy for comparing an American or British spec sheet. Calculation entirely local, in your browser.

How it works

Fuel consumption is expressed differently depending on the country: liters per 100 km in Europe, miles per gallon in the United States and the United Kingdom (with two different gallon definitions). This tool converts a single value to the four most common units simultaneously.

Why does US mpg differ from UK mpg?

The US gallon (3.785 liters) is smaller than the UK imperial gallon (4.546 liters). The same vehicle will therefore show a higher mpg figure in the UK than in the US, even though its actual consumption is identical — it's purely a difference in the volume unit, not engine performance.

Why does a lower L/100km value correspond to a higher mpg?

The two units measure efficiency in opposite directions: L/100km indicates the amount of fuel consumed for a fixed distance (the lower, the better), while mpg indicates the distance traveled for a fixed amount of fuel (the higher, the better). The relationship between the two is therefore inversely proportional.
