Hash generator (MD5 / SHA)

Calculate the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512 hash of a text directly in your browser. Useful for verifying a file's integrity or quickly generating a hash.

Example:

How it works

A common developer use case: you download a file (an installer, an ISO image, a dependency archive) and the site offers a SHA256 hash next to the download link. By pasting the file's content here (or computing the hash on your machine and comparing it) you verify that the received file matches the original exactly, without alteration or corruption during transfer. This tool is also used to quickly generate a hash for a simple signature, a deterministic identifier, or to compare two texts without displaying them in plain text.

Is MD5 still safe to use?

No, not for security. MD5 collisions (two different contents producing the same hash) have been known and easy to generate for over 15 years, which makes it unusable for signing a file or verifying integrity against a deliberate attack. MD5 remains present only for compatibility with older systems or quick checks with no security stakes. For any integrity check or cryptographic use, prefer SHA-256 (or even SHA-512).

What is the difference between SHA-1 and SHA-256?

SHA-1 produces a shorter hash (160 bits) and is also considered broken for security use since the demonstration of practical collisions in 2017. SHA-256, a member of the SHA-2 family, produces a 256-bit hash and has no known collision in practice to date: it's the recommended default choice for verifying a file's integrity or generating a reliable hash.

The calculation is performed 100% locally in your browser via WebAssembly: the text you enter is never transmitted to a server.
