Make black transparent
Convert a black background (or any near-black area) in an image to transparency, with an adjustable tolerance to cover dark gray shades. Perfect for extracting a logo or subject from a black background.
How it works
The tool calculates, for each pixel, how far its color is from pure black (0, 0, 0). If that distance stays below the chosen tolerance, the pixel's alpha channel is set to zero (full transparency). The result is exported as a PNG to preserve the transparency.
Why does part of the black background remain visible?
A "black" background often has slight reflections, grain, or compression artifacts that lighten it in places. Gradually increase the tolerance until the background disappears completely, while checking that the subject itself (if it contains dark areas) stays intact.
Is this tool suitable for cutting out a complex subject?
It works well when the background is uniformly black and the subject does not contain dark areas close to that shade. For a more precise cutout based on a color clicked in the image, use the "Remove image background (magic wand)" tool instead.
