Comic / Cartoon Effect on an Image
Turn a photo into a comic-book style illustration: colors are reduced to a few flat shades and the main outlines are reinforced in black. Adjust the number of shades and the edge detection sensitivity.
How it works
The tool calculates a brightness gradient between neighboring pixels to spot strong edges in the image (using a simplified Sobel edge detection approach), which it draws in black. The remaining pixels get their colors reduced to a limited number of shades per channel (posterization), producing the flat color areas typical of comic book art.
What happens if I increase the edge sensitivity?
The higher the sensitivity, the more low-luminance transitions are considered edges and drawn in black, giving a result closer to hand-drawn inking, but it can also create stray lines on very textured or noisy photos.
How many shades should I choose for a realistic comic look?
Between 4 and 6 shades per channel usually gives the best compromise: enough tonal range to remain readable, while keeping the flat color areas characteristic of printed comic book style.
Edge detection and color posterization are computed entirely in your browser: your photo is never sent to a server.
