Emboss effect
Transform an image into a grayscale embossed render, like an engraving in relief.
How it works
Want an "engraved on metal" texture effect for a banner or decorative background? The tool applies a classic convolution kernel that highlights brightness transitions in a given direction, turning the image into a uniform gray render with light or dark embossed edges.
Why does the image become almost entirely gray?
This is the expected behavior of the emboss effect: areas of uniform color (with no brightness variation) become medium gray, while only the edges stand out light or dark depending on their orientation, giving the illusion of relief lit from the side.
Can the original colors be recovered after the effect?
No, the emboss effect converts the image to grayscale and is not reversible. Keep a copy of the original image if you want to go back.
100% local processing: the effect is applied in your browser via our WebAssembly module — your images are never sent to a server.
