Do I need to provide an already-square image?
No, if your image isn't square, it is automatically center-cropped to its smallest dimension before icons are generated. For precise control over the crop, ideally provide an already-square image.
What starting resolution should I choose?
Start with an image of at least 512×512 pixels (the largest proposed size), so all generated icons, including the largest, stay sharp. An image smaller than the requested size would be enlarged and lose sharpness.
