Reduce JPEG Compression Artifacts

Reduce visible blocks and artifacts in a photo that's been heavily JPEG-compressed, thanks to a gentle, adjustable smoothing that softens block transitions without destroying sharp edges.

How it works

Aggressive JPEG compression divides the image into 8×8 pixel blocks and can produce visible transitions between these blocks (a “blocky” effect) as well as halos near edges. This tool applies a light blur mixed with the original image according to the chosen percentage, smoothing those transitions without starting from a completely blurry image.

Does this tool recover details lost during compression?

No, information actually lost during compression cannot be recreated identically. The tool only makes artifacts less visible to the eye by smoothing block transitions, improving the perceived rendering without reconstructing the original details.

What intensity should I choose?

Start around 30–50% for a discreet correction that keeps overall sharpness. Above 70%, the smoothing becomes more visible and may slightly blur small details and fine textures, so reserve that for cases with very pronounced artifacts.

100% local processing: the smoothing is done entirely in your browser in JavaScript — your photo is never sent to a server.
