Photo Mat Effect
Add a wide mat-style border around your photo, like an art gallery frame, with an optional thin border right around the image to enhance the framing effect.
How It Works
A mat is the wide, clean margin traditionally placed between a photo and its frame to give it breathing room and a gallery feel. This tool expands the support around your photo with the color and thickness you choose, and can add a thin line just around the image to visually mark its edge, just like a real custom frame.
What mat thickness should I choose?
A thickness of 10–20% gives a classic standard framing mat look. Beyond 25%, the effect becomes more pronounced and closer to a minimalist composition with lots of negative space around the subject—very popular for editorial or portfolio visuals.
Can I use a dark-colored mat?
Yes, the mat color is entirely up to you: a dark shade (black, anthracite gray) gives a more contemporary feel and makes bright photos pop, while off-white or beige stays closest to traditional framing.
