Add margins to make an image square
Turn a rectangular photo into a square image by adding margins around it, without cropping or distorting the subject — choose either a solid color or a blurred background based on the image itself.
How it works
Many platforms (social networks, profile thumbnails, product catalogs) require a square format. Rather than cropping a rectangular photo and risking cutting off an important part of the subject, this tool enlarges the canvas to the longest side of the image and fills the added space with a solid color or a blurred background derived from the image itself, keeping the original photo fully visible and centered.
How does the “blurred background” mode work?
The original image is first stretched to fill the entire square, then heavily blurred and slightly darkened to serve as a harmonious background, before the sharp, undistorted photo is layered on top, centered at its actual size. The result avoids plain color bands while staying visually consistent with the photo's colors.
Can the subject of my photo be cropped?
No: unlike a classic square crop, this tool never removes a single pixel from your original image. It only adds space on either side of the shorter dimension to reach a perfect square.
100% local processing: the blurred or solid background is generated directly in your browser via the Canvas API — your photo is never sent to a server.
