Tilt-shift effect (miniature look) for images

Give a photo taken from a high angle a "miniature model" look: a horizontal band stays sharp and saturated while the rest of the image gradually blurs. Adjust the position and width of the sharp band as well as the color boost.

Example:
Drag and drop an image, or click to browse. 25 MB max. Works best on a high-angle photo.

How it works

A horizontal band stays sharp while the blur gradually increases the further you move from it toward the top and bottom of the image (horizontal, then vertical blur with a variable radius). Color saturation is also increased, especially within the sharp band, a key ingredient of the "miniature model" illusion popularized by tilt-shift photography.

Why does the sharp band need to be horizontal?

The effect works best on photos taken from above (high-angle shots), where near and distant objects are naturally spread from the top to the bottom of the image. A sharp horizontal band then mimics the shallow depth of field of a tilt-shift lens, creating the illusion that the scene is a miniature model.

How can I strengthen the "miniature toy" effect?

Reduce the sharp band width to 10-15% and raise the color boost to 70-100%: the contrast between the sharp, highly saturated area and the heavy blur on the rest of the image greatly strengthens the miniature illusion.

The progressive blur and saturation are calculated entirely in your browser: your photo is never sent to a server.
