Image to ICO converter

Turn an image (PNG, JPEG, etc.) into a .ico file usable as a Windows icon. Images larger than 256x256 are automatically resized. 100% local processing in your browser (WebAssembly) — nothing is sent to a server.

How it works

The .ico format is still required in certain specific contexts despite the popularity of PNG: a Windows application icon (.exe), an icon associated with a desktop shortcut, or an icon shown in Windows File Explorer. If you only have a PNG or a JPEG on hand, this tool converts it directly into a usable .ico, automatically resizing images that are too large to comply with the 256x256 pixel limit imposed by the format.

Can an ICO file contain several sizes?

Yes, that's precisely the point of the format: a single .ico file can group together several resolutions of the same icon (for example 16x16, 32x32 and 256x256), and the operating system automatically picks the size suited to the display context (desktop icon, taskbar, explorer in large icon view, etc.).

What source size should I use for a good result?

Start with a square image of at least 256x256 pixels, ideally a PNG with a transparent background if the icon needs to stand out from the desktop background. A lower-resolution image will work but will look blurry once displayed at a large size.
