LICENSE file generator
Choose a common open source license, enter the author and the year, and the tool generates the full official text, ready to save as a LICENSE file at the root of your project.
How it works
Select one of the most common licenses in the open source ecosystem, enter the author's name (a person or an organization) and the year of publication, then click “Generate license”. The full official license text is produced with your details inserted in the right places, ready to copy or download as LICENSE to place at the root of your repository.
Which license should I choose for my project?
It depends on your goals: MIT and ISC are very permissive and simple; Apache 2.0 adds an explicit patent grant; BSD-3-Clause is close to MIT with a clause on using contributors' names; GPL-3.0 requires derivative works to remain under the same license (copyleft); The Unlicense places the code in the public domain. This tool generates the legal text but doesn't replace legal advice for special cases.
Is the generated text legally valid?
The text faithfully reproduces the official wording of each license, with only the author's name and the year substituted. It's the same approach GitHub or choosealicense.com offer when you create a repository.
Your information (name, year) is never sent to a server: the text is generated entirely in your browser.
