Mailto link generator

Create a mailto: link that opens the default email client with the recipient, subject and message body already filled in, ready to add to a website or an email signature. The link is built entirely in your browser.

How it works

The mailto: protocol lets an HTML link open the user's default email app directly, with some fields pre-filled. This tool properly encodes the spaces, line breaks and special characters in the subject and message body so the link works in all common email clients (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail...).

Why do some characters need to be encoded?

A mailto link is a URL, and URLs can't directly contain spaces, line breaks or malformed accented characters: they must be replaced with their encoded equivalent (such as %20 for a space). Without this encoding, some clients might truncate the subject or the message body.

Does the link work if the user has no email client set up?

No: if no email app is associated with mailto links on the user's device, the browser can't open a draft automatically. This is a limitation of the protocol itself, not of this tool.

Everything you enter stays in your browser: nothing is sent to a server to build this link.
