How it works

The manifest.json file is what lets a browser offer to install your site as a Progressive Web App (PWA): an icon on the home screen, full-screen launch without an address bar, theme colors consistent with your brand. This tool generates a valid manifest with the name, colors, start URL and display mode you chose, plus standard icon references to adapt to your own files.

Where should I place the generated file?

Place the manifest.json file at the root of your site, then reference it in the <head> of your pages with <link rel="manifest" href="/manifest.json">. Don't forget to also provide the icon files at the paths given (/icon-192.png and /icon-512.png by default), otherwise the browser won't offer the install option.

What's the difference between "standalone" and "fullscreen"?

standalone hides the browser's address bar but keeps the system UI elements (status bar, navigation buttons), giving an appearance close to a native app. fullscreen uses the whole available screen, with no UI elements at all, which mainly suits games or immersive apps. browser keeps the classic browser tab experience.

Is the manifest enough to make the site installable?

A valid manifest.json is necessary but not always sufficient: most browsers also require the site to be served over HTTPS and have a registered service worker to actually offer installation. The manifest still remains the central configuration piece that describes the app's identity.
