Equation solver with steps

Solve a first-degree linear equation, such as "2x + 3 = 7" or "3x − 5 = 2x + 1", and follow each step of the calculation: grouping terms, isolating x and the final division.

Examples:
Accepted formats: numbers, "x", spaces, + and − only.

How it works

The equation is split into two sides on either side of the "=" sign, and each side is parsed into x terms (such as "2x" or "-3x") and constant terms (such as "5" or "-7"). All the x terms are then grouped on one side and the constants on the other, before dividing to isolate x.

Which equation formats are accepted?

The tool accepts first-degree linear equations with a single unknown named "x", integer or decimal coefficients, and only the + and − operators (no explicit multiplication or parentheses). For example, "3x - 5 = 2x + 1" or "-2.5x + 4 = 0" work.

What does "no solution" or "infinitely many solutions" mean?

If the coefficient of x disappears after grouping (for example "2x + 1 = 2x + 5"), the equation has either no solution (the remaining constants are different), or infinitely many solutions if both sides turn out to be exactly identical.

The equation is parsed and solved locally in your browser, with no data sent to a server.
