MIME type lookup

Find the MIME type for a file extension (e.g. pdf → application/pdf), or the other way around by entering a full MIME type.

Examples:

How it works

MIME types (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) tell the browser or server what kind of file something is, regardless of its extension. This tool covers about forty common types (images, documents, audio, video, archives, fonts) so you don't have to dig through a lookup table every time you configure a Content-Type header or an accept attribute.

How do I search in both directions?

Enter an extension on its own (with or without the dot, e.g. .png or png) to get its MIME type, or enter a full MIME type containing a "/" (e.g. image/png) to get the matching extension or extensions.

What if my extension isn't found?

The tool covers the most common web and office extensions. For a rarer or proprietary format, check the documentation of the software that produces the file, or the IANA media types registry.

100% local processing: the lookup runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly — no data is sent to a server.
