Convert MP3 to WAV

Select one or more MP3 files to convert them to WAV (uncompressed PCM). Only MP3 → WAV conversion is available here: the reverse conversion would require a native MP3 encoder (like LAME) which doesn't exist in pure WebAssembly. For a royalty-free compressed format, see OGG ↔ WAV.

How it works

The MP3 format compresses audio with loss to reduce file size, which becomes an issue as soon as you enter a real production workflow: editing software (Adobe Audition, Reaper, Pro Tools) often expects uncompressed PCM to avoid re-encoding artifacts. This tool decodes your MP3 and regenerates a WAV file containing the PCM samples, ready to be imported into any professional software.

Why can't I convert a WAV to MP3 here?

Encoding MP3 requires a native encoder (historically LAME), which relies on highly optimized C code and has no mature pure Rust equivalent in WebAssembly. Decoding MP3 (playback) is, on the other hand, well supported, which is what enables the MP3 → WAV conversion offered here.

What's the quality difference between MP3 and WAV?

WAV (PCM) stores audio samples with no loss at all: it's a 100% faithful format to the source, but bulky (about 10 MB per minute at CD quality). MP3 removes information deemed barely audible to reduce size by up to 10 times, at the cost of an irreversible loss of quality. Converting an MP3 to WAV does not restore the data lost during encoding: it simply changes the container.

Privacy: the whole conversion runs locally in your browser thanks to WebAssembly — your audio files are never sent to a server.
