Oven temperature converter (°C/°F/gas)
Convert an oven temperature between degrees Celsius, degrees Fahrenheit and thermostat (used in France, equivalent to the British "gas mark") — handy for following a recipe from another country. Calculation is entirely local, in your browser.
How it works
Recipes express oven temperature differently depending on where they come from: Celsius in France and most of Europe, Fahrenheit in the United States, and thermostat (or "gas mark" in the UK) on older ovens or in traditional recipes. This tool converts between these three scales.
How does the thermostat scale work?
The thermostat, graded from 1 to 10 on most French ovens, corresponds roughly to steps of 30°C: thermostat 6 corresponds to 180°C, thermostat 7 to 210°C, and so on. This scale is approximate and can vary slightly from one oven manufacturer to another.
Why does my American recipe call for such a high temperature?
Degrees Fahrenheit use a different scale from degrees Celsius: 350°F, a very common temperature in American baking, is actually about 177°C, close to the traditional thermostat 6. So it isn't a hotter temperature, just a different unit of measurement.
