Compress a PDF to a target size

Enter the maximum size you want (for example to meet an upload or email limit) and the tool automatically tries several compression levels, from the gentlest to the strongest, until it reaches that size.

How it works

The tool successively tries four compression levels for the embedded images, from the lightest on quality ("Prepress") to the most aggressive ("Screen"), and stops as soon as the resulting file falls below the target size. The PDF offered for download is therefore always the one that best preserves quality while meeting your size constraint.

Why isn't the target size sometimes reached?

If the document is mostly text with few or no images, image compression can only reduce its size slightly: the target size may then stay out of reach whatever compression level is tried. In that case, consider splitting the document into several smaller files with our split-by-size tool.

Is the result always the most compressed possible?

No, by design: the tool stops at the first compression level that reaches the target rather than always applying the maximum level, in order to preserve the best possible image quality while meeting the requested size constraint.
