Number PDF pages with Roman numerals

Add Roman numeral page numbers (I, II, III…) at the bottom of each page, like the traditional pagination of a preface, foreword or table of contents before printing.

How it works

Many printed books number their front matter (preface, foreword, table of contents) with Roman numerals, then switch to Arabic numerals from the first chapter. This tool converts each page number into Roman numerals and draws that text at the bottom of the page, at the position you choose, starting from the number you specify.

Can I number only part of the document (for example the first 6 pages)?

This version numbers all the pages of the imported file. To use Roman numerals on just one section (the front matter), first extract that section with our PDF page extraction tool, apply Roman numbering to it, then reassemble everything with the rest of the document, numbered separately in Arabic numerals using our page number tool.

What happens if the document has more than 3999 pages?

The classic Roman numeral system can't standardly represent a number greater than 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). If the starting number plus the page count exceeds this limit, a clear error is shown rather than an incorrect result.
