Extract text from a PDF

Get the raw text content of a PDF to paste elsewhere (email, text editor, internal search engine) without keeping the layout or formatting.

How it works

A "text" PDF (produced by a word processor, a web export, or invoicing software, for example) contains its content as real characters, even if you only see them through a layout. This tool reads that text content page by page and concatenates it into a single text area, with a separator between each page, so you can copy-paste or download it without having to retype the document by hand.

Why do some of my PDFs give no text at all?

A PDF from a scanner or a photo of a document is actually an image: there is no text really stored in the file, only pixels. This tool does not perform optical character recognition (OCR) and therefore cannot extract text from it — this is an honest limitation of the original format, not a bug in the tool.

Is the layout (columns, tables) preserved?

No, deliberately: the extraction keeps only the raw text, in the order it appears in the PDF's stream. Columns, tables, or complex formatting may therefore appear in a different order than their usual visual reading order.
