Turn a photo into an oil painting
Convert a photo into an oil painting using a neighborhood filter that groups the dominant tones of each area, creating smooth patches of color like brushstrokes. Adjust the analysis radius and the number of tone levels.
How it works
For each pixel, the tool examines its neighbors in a square around it and sorts their brightness into several levels. The most common level in that neighborhood determines the pixel's final color (the average color of that level), which smooths fine details and brings out large areas of uniform color, like touches of oil paint.
Why is the image limited to 380 pixels per side?
This filter analyzes a full neighborhood around each pixel, which is significantly more expensive than a simple blur. Reducing the working size keeps processing fast in the browser while still producing a clearly visible painted look.
Which setting gives the most "painted" look?
A larger brush radius (5-6 px) combined with a lower number of levels (8-12) gives large, very smooth areas of color, close to a thick paint look. Conversely, a small radius with many levels preserves more detail from the original photo.
The neighborhood filter is computed entirely in your browser, pixel by pixel: your photo is never sent to a server.
