How it works
The calculation divides the number of words read by the elapsed time in minutes to get a speed in words per minute (WPM). You can either paste a text directly (the words are counted automatically) or enter a known word count, then time your reading manually or with the built-in stopwatch.
What is the average adult reading speed?
An adult reader averages between 200 and 250 words per minute on ordinary text in their native language, with good comprehension. Trained readers can exceed 400 WPM, while technical text or a foreign language naturally slows reading down.
Is the built-in stopwatch accurate?
The stopwatch uses your browser's clock and updates every 100 milliseconds, which is more than enough to measure a reading time to the nearest second.
The pasted text and the measured time stay only in your browser: nothing is sent to a server to perform this calculation.
