Reading time estimator

Paste a text to estimate its reading time, adjusting the reading speed to suit your audience. Useful for a blog post, a video script or an email. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Example:
About 200-250 words/minute for an adult reading silently.

Paste a text to see the estimate.

How it works

The reading time shown at the top of an article ("5 min read") helps visitors decide whether they have time to read it now. This tool counts the words in your text, then divides that total by a given reading speed in words per minute to estimate the time needed.

What reading speed should I choose?

For an adult silently reading everyday text, a speed of 200 to 250 words per minute is a good average. For technical or dense content (documentation, contracts), lower it to around 150-180 words/minute; for very fluid content aimed at a fast reader, you can go up to 300 words/minute.

Does this estimate take images or layout into account?

No, the calculation is based only on the word count of the plain text pasted into the field. If your article contains many images, tables or callouts that slow down reading, the actual time will generally be a little longer than the estimate.

The pasted text stays in your browser for the calculation and is never sent to a server.
