Royal name generator

Generate a complete king or queen name, with Roman numeral, epithet and realm, for a fantasy novel, a role-playing game or a board game. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, nothing is sent to a server.

Example:

King Frédéric IX, known as le Magnanime des Rivages Perdus

How it works

A believable royal name usually follows a fixed structure: a historically inspired first name, a Roman numeral marking its place in the line, an epithet summing up the reign (the Wise, the Conqueror...) and sometimes the name of the realm being ruled. This tool randomly assembles these elements to propose a complete name ready to drop into your world.

Why is the Roman numeral sometimes "I" or "IX"?

The number indicates how many sovereigns bore this first name before them in the line; a high number like IX suggests an old, well-established dynasty, while an "I" suits the founder of a line or a recent usurper.

Can I combine the results to create an entire dynasty?

Yes, generate several names in a row with the same type of sovereign and treat them as members of the same line: you can then adjust the Roman numerals manually so that they follow each other chronologically.
