How it works
Google displays the title and meta description within a limited width that varies by device (desktop or mobile) and by the characters themselves, rather than by a fixed count. This tool measures the actual pixel width of your title and description using your browser's Canvas API (measureText), and shows a visual preview close to the real rendering on desktop and mobile, with the URL split into domain and path.
Why do pixel limits differ between desktop and mobile?
Because mobile screens are narrower, Google shows fewer characters there before truncating the title and description. A title that fits perfectly on desktop may therefore be cut off on mobile, which is why it's worth checking both previews, given that a growing share of searches happen on mobile.
What actually happens when the title is truncated?
Google cuts the text and adds an ellipsis, sometimes in the middle of a word, which can make the title less engaging or less clear to users. In some cases, Google even rewrites the displayed title entirely from the page content instead of using your tag as is, especially if it's judged not representative of the content.
Privacy: the measurement and preview are generated entirely in your browser, and no data is sent to a server.
