Short ID generator

Generate random short IDs (nanoid-style) with a fully customizable alphabet and length, using your browser's secure cryptographic API. 100% local generation, nothing is sent to a server.

Generated IDs (10)

How it works

Unlike a UUID (36 characters with hyphens), a short ID stays readable in a URL, a file name or a tracking code while keeping enough entropy to remain unique. Choose a preset or custom alphabet, a length and the number of IDs to generate: each character is drawn using the browser's secure cryptographic API (crypto.getRandomValues), not a plain Math.random().

What length should I choose to avoid collisions?

With a 62-character alphanumeric alphabet, a 10-character ID already offers about 62¹⁰ possible combinations, more than enough for most uses (session IDs, tracking codes, URL shortener keys). For very large-scale use with millions of generated IDs, go for 14 to 16 characters to reduce the risk of collision even further.

Why offer an “unambiguous characters” alphabet?

When an ID has to be copied by hand (a pickup code, a printed activation code), the characters 0/O and 1/I/l are easily confused depending on the font. The “unambiguous characters” preset excludes them to limit human typing errors.

Privacy: generation runs entirely in your browser, and no ID is transmitted to or stored on a server.
