Prefilled SMS link generator

Create a link in the sms: format that directly opens the visitor's messaging app with the number and message already filled in, handy for a “Text us” button on a website or a digital business card. Everything is generated in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

Preferably with the international dialing code (e.g., +1 for the United States).

How it works

On a contact page, an event sign-up form or an email signature, offering a “Send a text” button saves visitors from manually retyping a number and a message. Enter the number and, if needed, a default message: the tool automatically builds the matching sms: link, ready to drop into an HTML button or link.

Why two different links for Android and iOS?

Android and iOS don't use exactly the same syntax to prefill the message body: Android expects a question mark (sms:number?body=...) while iOS/Safari expects an ampersand (sms:number&body=...). For a site visited from both Android and iPhone, the simplest approach is to detect the device on the server side or to use the Android format, which generally remains compatible.

Is the prefilled message guaranteed to appear?

The behavior depends on the default SMS app on the visitor's device: the vast majority of modern apps (Messages, Google Messages, third-party apps) honor the body parameter, but some older versions or specific apps may ignore it and only open the conversation with the number you entered.

The number and message you enter stay only in your browser while the link is being built: nothing is sent to or kept on a server.
