How it works

This tool is based on the idea of the Windows Character Map or the macOS Character Viewer, as a web version you can use without installing anything. It groups the special characters most often needed when editing text — typographic punctuation, legal symbols, accented letters — so you don't have to memorize a Unicode code.

Why use a true em dash (—) instead of a simple hyphen (-)?

In careful typography, the em dash (—) and the en dash (–) mark an aside or a range of values, while the hyphen (-) is used only to join compound words. Using the right character improves readability and gives text a more professional look, especially in a published document or a polished layout.

How do I insert a special character directly from my operating system?

On Windows, the "Character Map" app (charmap) lets you browse all available Unicode characters. On a Mac, the "Character Viewer" opens with Control+Command+Space. These tools are comprehensive but can be slow to use for a one-off character; this page gives you quicker access to the most commonly needed ones.
