How it works

The tool identifies the input format from two clues: the presence of the WEBVTT header and the decimal separator used in timecodes (comma for SRT, period for VTT). Once the format is recognized, each subtitle block (start, end, text) is extracted and rewritten in the syntax of the target format.

What are the differences between SRT and VTT?

The VTT (WebVTT) format, used notably by HTML5 players, starts with the WEBVTT header line and separates milliseconds with a period (00:00:01.500), while the SRT format uses a comma (00:00:01,500) and has no header. Block numbers are required in SRT but optional in VTT.

What happens if my VTT file contains styles or text positions?

This tool focuses on the timecodes and text of the subtitles: VTT-specific advanced style tags (positioning, CSS classes, speaker indicators) are not interpreted and will be kept as is in the block text, which may give unexpected results once converted to SRT, a format that doesn't natively support them.

No data leaves your device: format detection and conversion are performed entirely by your browser.
