Leave at 0 if no revenue yet

How it works

Runway is the number of months during which a startup can keep operating before running out of cash, assuming its monthly expenses and revenue remain stable. This tool first calculates the net burn (expenses minus revenue), then divides the available cash by this net burn to obtain the number of months remaining.

What are "burn rate" and "net burn"?

The gross burn rate corresponds to the company's total monthly expenses (salaries, rent, tools, marketing...). Net burn subtracts monthly revenue from these expenses: this is the amount that actually determines how fast the cash is decreasing. If revenue exceeds expenses, net burn becomes negative and cash increases instead of decreasing.

How many months of runway are considered safe?

Most investors and venture capital funds recommend maintaining at least 12 to 18 months of runway, in order to have enough of a margin to adjust strategy, reach new milestones or raise a new funding round without being under pressure. Below 6 months, a startup generally enters a high-risk zone. This calculation remains a simplified estimate based on constant expenses and revenue; it does not replace the advice of a chartered accountant or a financial advisor for a detailed analysis of your cash flow.
