Estimate how many files fit in a given space

Estimate how many photos, songs, videos or documents fit in a given amount of storage — useful before buying a memory card, a hard drive or a cloud subscription. Instant calculation, entirely local in your browser.

How it works

Before buying a memory card or an external hard drive, or choosing an online storage plan, it helps to know how many files it can actually hold. The tool divides the total capacity you enter by the average size of a file of the chosen type, using standard units (1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 TB = 1024 GB).

Why are the file sizes used only averages?

The actual size of a photo, a song or a video varies with resolution, compression format and length: a photo from a recent smartphone can weigh 3 MB or 15 MB depending on the settings, and a 4K video can vary widely depending on the encoding bitrate. The values used here are realistic averages for everyday use, but the "custom size" option lets you refine the calculation with your own files.

Does the calculation account for space already used by the system?

No, the estimate is based on the total capacity entered. In practice, a new storage device always reserves a small part of its space for the file system, and a drive that is already partly full has less free space: adjust the capacity you enter to match the space actually available if needed.

This estimate is a simple calculation, done entirely in your browser with no data transmitted.
